Radar-based vital sign measurement
Radar is an interesting sensing principle to monitor basic vital signs comfortably without body contact and with low-cost Radar sensors (Emerald, From Wearables to Invisibles; Thiel, Kreiseler, & Seifert, 2009).
It uses electromagnetic waves as sensitive probes, which are reflected at the chest wall and undergo a Doppler frequency shift if the chest wall is moving due to the subject’s respiration (Muehlsteff, Pinter, & Morren, 2009) .
The technique is sensitive enough to even detect heartbeat information. However, any motion by a subject causes artifacts, which limit the applicability. Artifact handling is a topic of current research. Radar has intrinsic advantages as well as disadvantages, which have to be considered for each particular monitoring scenario. Commercial devices exist for sleep monitoring.
